The Premier Needs To Hear From You!

Write to the Premier and remind him of his obligation to provide for the education of all children in the province. His neglect of the 5% (more than 110,000 kids) kids who don't attend public schools is insulting and hurtful. - Private Member's Resolution - Important Parent & Supporter Update!
April 30, 2007 - On April 26, Liberal MPP, Peter Fonseca (Mississauga East) brought forward the following private member's resolution asking that all members of the Assembly "affirm their commitment to students in the public education system strongly and to oppose any attempt to take public money and hand it over to private schools." Thanks in part to the many parents and supporters who contacted Mr. Fonseca about their disappointment with this resolution and also to those who contacted their local MPP's encouraging them to either vote against this resolution or not show up at all to vote.....THIS MOTION WAS DEFEATED RESOUNDINGLY!! The Conservatives showed up in big numbers to vote "no" and only 3 Liberals showed up to vote at all. This is encouraging to all of us supporters of school choice heading into the next election - using our voices and our votes - we can impact the political process and take full advantage of our democratic privileges of speaking up!

Level 2 – “Speaking Up”

• Speak to your local MPP about parental choice in education
  • regular emails, phone calls, faxes or visits either weekly or monthly
  • copying media coverage on this issue to your local MPP with your comments
  • visit your MPP in person either alone or with a few other parents/supporters
• Make the issue important to your local media and your local public community
  • Frequent and varied letters to the editor correcting misinformation or providing new information
  • Calling to radio phone-in shows when the issue is raised.
  • Write “opinion” or “commentary” pieces on your own independent school experience
• Participate in government consultations as information is made available through PEC
  • townhall meetings, province-wide consultations, government committee hearings

Level 3 – “Acting Up”

• Become a PEC Parent Rep. for your school community
  • pass PEC information to parents/supporters in your local school community encouraging their involvement in our province-wide initiatives
  • organize scheduled visits to your local MPP by parents/supporters in your local community
  • invite your local MPP to regularly scheduled school events
  • assist your school in increasing its profile in your local community by regularly participating in community events and inviting local media into your school’s life as often as possible
  • facilitate letter-writing campaigns as advertised by PEC
• Communicate regularly to government officials on the issue of parental choice in education
  • contact the Premier, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Education and the Leaders of the Opposition parties with information on this issue either weekly or monthly

Level 4 – “Living It Up”

• Put yourself in a position to make a difference on this issue at a higher political level
  • volunteer to participate in local townhall meetings or focus groups
  • join a political party to have influence in the development of party policies
  • join a local riding association so you can have influence in the development of party policies
  • apply and volunteer for Policy Advisory Committees on education in a political party
  • attend policy conventions and policy consultations to give input
• Make the issue of parental choice in education important for the media and the public
  • submit news tips on this issue to television, newspaper and other media outlets
  • contact local talk show hosts and producers to feed ideas for coverage of this issue
  • contact and/or visit opinion page editor of your local newspaper
  • apply to become a member of your local newspapers “community editorial board”
• Volunteer to assist in an election campaign for a political party
